Chelation Therapy

What is Chelation Therapy?

EDTA Chelation therapy involves repeated administration of a powerful antioxidant, a man-made amino acid into the veins.   It is approved by the FDA for removal of toxic metal ions such as lead throughout the body.  EDTA is most commonly used in cases of heavy metal toxicity like with lead or mercury.

EDTA chelation is also used for treating atherosclerosis and other chronic degenerative diseases.   It does this by latching onto or binding metals and excreting them in the urine.  Besides heavy metals which are the culprits to many ill symptoms and can cause chronic disease manifestation, EDTA also naturally seeks and binds or ‘chelates’ calcium, one of the components of the atherosclerotic plaque in coronary heart disease, who’s rupture leads to myocardial infarction. The chelation or binding of calcium by EDTA can allegedly result in the removal of plaque and calcium deposits from arteries and veins.  Its use for heart disease is currently being reviewed at an NCCAM (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine) and NIH (National Institute of Health) funded multi-center clinical trial.

EDTA has been used in medicine since the 1940’s and numerous patients have reported life changing and life saving results from its use.

What are the benefits of chelation therapy?

Chelation therapy improves blood circulation by removing excess calcium and mineral deposits that accumulate on the inner lining of our blood vessels and clog them over time which is referred to as hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis.  EDTA has been used over the past 50 years to reverse the effects of arterial plaque buildup and thus prevent heart attacks and strokes.  EDTA chelation also has blood thining effects helping to prevent formation of blood clots which can cause heart attack or stroke potentially.

Chelation therapy also treats heavy metal toxicity by removing accumulated toxic metals from the body which can be the culprits to many ill-symptoms and can result in chronic disease manifestation and neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s in adults or autism in children.

How does chelation therapy work?

Chelation therapy sessions involve intravenous infusions of EDTA which is a powerful antioxidant along with other vitamins and nutrients over a three hour period while you relax in a recliner.  Some patients like to listen to music, or read while others use the time for deep relaxation and meditation while they’re getting the antioxidant infusion.  About 20-30 weekly sessions are usually needed, then once monthly sessions for the next 10 months for maximum benefit.

EDTA works by chelating or binding calcium and other minerals in the bloodstream resulting in a series of biochemical reactions that improve vascular and cellular health.  It also binds free radicals which can cause damage to cells, tissues and blood vessel linings.  Because of its chelating or binding effect it affects mineral stores as well.  You will need an assessment of your body’s mineral status which we use to customize a vitamin and mineral protocol for you.
